Assessing the feasibility of developing forestry carbon projects with certified communities in Mexico
The certified forestry communities in Mexico, led by the ECOFORCE Alliance and supported by the National Forestry Commission, Rainforest Alliance and the Mexican Civil Council for Sustainable Silviculture (CCMSS), are interested in exploring innovative mechanisms to generate financial incentives for sustainable forestry management in community-owned forests.
One possible mechanism is the sale of carbon credits that could be generated in certified forests. Also, a potential forestry bond, could serve as a potential financing mechanism to provide the upfront finance needed to implement the improved forestry management practices and be repaid in part by the generated carbon credits.
The purpose of this consulting project is to assess whether a forestry carbon project (or group of projects) could be feasible for FSC certified communities in Mexico and generate additional revenue streams and become part of a larger, forest bond scheme.
The findings of this project will allow to understand the organisational, technical and economic requirements to structure a group of forestry carbon projects and to test whether a forest bond could become a financial mechanism to promote further forestry management practices in Mexico.
