Sofala Community Carbon Project
The Sofala Community Carbon Project, under the design and management of Envirotrade Carbon Limited, engages with local subsistence farming communities in Sofala Province, Mozambique, to protect old-growth tropical Miombo forests, rehabilitate degraded land, and improve agricultural yields through conservation farming and other techniques. The project is operated under the Plan Vivo and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) standards, and has been validated by the Rainforest Alliance for the second edition of the CCBS at the Gold level in all three evaluation areas of climate, community and biodiversity.
The project, which has been fully operational since 2003, now has some 10,000 hectares of old-growth Miombo forest under REDD protection and approximately 6,000 agroforestry contracts in place with 2,000 subsistence farmers.
